When it comes to communicating your website’s message – who you serve, what you love about what you do – you need to clearly spell that out.

I get it. You’re a Realtor. Not a writer.

Great search engine rankings will only get your website so far. Your home page should draw your visitors in and help them feel at home.

Content that retains their interest and answers their questions will turn website visitors into clients.

Let’s write some inviting text for the home page of your farm area website.

Have you heard of B-HAGs? That’s a “big, hairy audacious goal”. With that B-HAG in sight, you might want to skip the steps of breaking that goal down into bite-sized pieces.

(It’s that part of us that says “I want to lose 20 pounds” when losing 20 starts with 1, then 2, then 5. Or the part of us that wants to run a marathon, but hasn’t run a 5k, 10k or half marathon, yet.)

But reality says you have to do the work to get the results.

This article is going to break “writing your real estate website home page” into… sentences.

Check out this easy Real Estate website home page writing formula:

  • Headline. Hook. Personal, relevant, grabs attention.
  • Reassure. Tell them you’re talking to THEM, not just anyone.
  • Introduce Yourself. One or two sentences, now that you’ve got their attention.
  • Invite Them In. Tell them where they should look and what they’ll find.

I keep using the word ‘inviting’ to describe these sentences.
I’m suggesting using a tone and style that feels familiar to your reader:

  • Be conversational.
  • Write the way you speak.
  • Remember you don’t have to be formal to be professional.
  • Don’t be afraid to be funny and show personality.
  • Read what you’ve written out loud, and imagine you were talking to a friend.

Are your typing fingers still stuck on what to write?

Try turning on an audio recorder (most smartphones have one) and speaking out loud.

Answer these questions as best you can:

  • How does your happiest client feel when they’ve found their perfect home?
  • How does your favourite client react when you sell their home for more than they thought you would?
  • What do your favourite clients say about your service to their neighbours?
  • What do you say when someone asks “what do you do”? (Hint: the answer should not be as boring as “I’m a Realtor”.)
  • What’s was the most exciting part of your last deal?
  • Who are you building this website for?
  • Who do you visualize is searching for homes on your website?

If writing is still not your thing, don’t hesitate to outsource.

You can easily hire a writer if this process is keeping you stuck or creating an urge to procrastinate!

You may need outside perspective to get the content juices flowing. If you hire someone to write for you, don’t feel that you have to use the words exactly as provided. Put your own voice and tone into it.

The bottom line is (that was a poor attempt at a “writing” pun) – generic, dry and boring text gets ignored. You want to build a website that’s going to get attention. Speak directly to your website visitor, and they will listen.
